Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) has recently found a misleading promotion campaign calling for public support on regulation (not a total ban) of alternative smoking products (including electronic cigarettes, heat-not-burn products and herbal cigarettes, etc) at newspaper stalls and convenience stores.

The public must stay alert on these promotion campaigns initiated by the tobacco industry and their sponsored organizations, with an intention to legitimate the introduction of these smoking products in the market for profit making.

To nip it in the bud, COSH emphasizes to enact a total ban on the import, manufacture, sale, distribution and advertisement of alternative smoking products in Hong Kong. Regulation would allow these products entering the market and becoming a gateway to youth smoking. Over 3 million secondary school students used these products in the US proved that regulatory approach is not able to prevent its epidemic, especially among the youngsters. Hong Kong would follow and the problems would become out of control unless a total ban on alternative smoking products is imposed.

Please show your support to a total ban on alternative smoking products by signing up at COSH webpage
www.smokefree.hk/support. COSH also urges the Government to take a bold step to formulate a timeline for a total ban of smoking in order to protect the public from potential health risks associated with any forms of tobacco uses.
