Following a routine roadside inspection, Hungary's custom authorities have seized about 20 tons of counterfeit tobacco made of sawdust and different aromas, Finance Minister Mihaly Varga told journalists here on Tuesday.

This was one of the largest counterfeit tobacco busts in Europe, Varga said on social media, adding that the authorities also discovered the factory in western Hungary where the counterfeit tobacco was produced. The counterfeiters had ties to an international criminal network based in Germany.

Varga estimated the damage caused to the state budget at 600 million Hungarian forints (2 million U.S. dollars).
