Over the past 5 years there has been a significant boost towards the use of heated tobacco including electronic cigarettes in Japan.

Compared to cigarettes, heated tobaccos are less harmful and carcinogenic, and health hazards are less, according to manufacturers.

But is that true?

The aerosol inhaled into the anatomic dead space is exhaled at the concentration that it is inhaled into exhaled breath and contaminates the surrounding air.

Although dioxins such as nitrosamines and benzopyrene, which are potent carcinogens, are certainly low compared to those in leaf tobaccos, these substances do not have thresholds such as how many milligrams and micrograms or less can be absorbed, so indoor use must be strictly prohibited.

It cannot be proved without long-term epidemiological surveys what kind of health damage from long-term harmful substances and carcinogens, even small amounts, will be cause not only to smokers but also to passive smokers.

It cannot be said that the health hazard is small because there are a few harmful substances and carcinogens in the aerosol.

Heated tobacco companies do not say heated tobaccos will reduce health hazards, but simply advertise that heated tobaccos have low levels of toxic and carcinogenic substances.

Even if there are few harmful ingredients, it is clear that heated tobaccos contain harmful substances and carcinogens, and it is important for patients addicted to nicotine to discontinue the use of heated tobaccos as well as cigarettes.
